For most people, the one the questions always in the front of their mind is “how much do braces cost” We hear this question almost every day at Champlain Orthodontics. With many treatment options to choose from and customized treatment plans for every patient, the answer to that question will depend on several different variables! These include:
- The type of braces chosen
- Whether the braces are for an adult or a child
- The orthodontic issues being corrected
- How long braces will be needed
- If the patient has dental insurance that covers orthodontics
- The orthodontist providing treatment
- The area in which the patient lives and will be receiving treatment
These are an example of just some of the factors to help determine the cost of your braces. For example, traditional metal braces are generally the least expensive option, while clear braces or Invisalign clear aligner therapy may cost slightly more. Orthodontic treatment for children will often be a bit less expensive than adult treatment, though this will vary from case to case. Patients who have more severe or complex problems may require longer treatment times, which means more work for the orthodontist and more follow-up appointments.
And of course, each orthodontist will have a unique pricing structure based on where they’re located. Some insurance policies cover orthodontic treatment, but how much will depend on the individual patient and the treatment needed.

What is the average cost for braces?
There’s no “one size fits all” answer for how much orthodontic treatment will cost. However, the average cost for a child can be anywhere from $3-7K, while adult braces or aligners can run from around $5-8K. Again, the total cost will depend on the individual patient’s specific needs, along with the factors mentioned above.
Using dental insurance to cover orthodontic treatment
Some dental insurance plans will cover orthodontic treatment, but the coverage rules and policies can be confusing. We have many years of experience working with insurance companies, and we’re committed to helping our patients receive the maximum coverage!
Each customized treatment plan is based upon the patient’s unique health needs and the professional judgment of Dr. Ryan or Dr. Eaton. We won’t recommend treatment based on whether or not certain treatment options are covered by insurance. Instead, our patients are presented with a plan that will best address their needs and goals.
Once a patient has seen Dr. Ryan or Dr. Eaton for a free consultation and received a diagnosis and treatment plan, those with dental insurance should check with their provider to see what will be covered when it comes to orthodontic treatment, and what won’t be.
As a courtesy to our patients, we’re happy to help with insurance claims and paperwork. Co-payments or out of pocket expenses will be estimated in advance of treatment. Once treatment is complete and all insurance payments are received, we’ll reconcile the account. You’ll be responsible for any underpayment at that point.
If insurance doesn’t cover treatment, can the cost be deducted?
If braces are considered to be medically necessary, the dental health care costs that occur as a result of your treatment may be tax-deductible. However, the cost has to exceed a certain amount before any deductions kick in. You should keep track of all expenses associated with your braces treatment if you intend to deduct the costs, including co-pays and check-up visits.
Will Medicaid cover the cost of braces?
Treatment costs may be covered by Medicaid if the patient’s braces are considered to be medically necessary. For those who want to learn more about this possibility, visit http://www.medicaid.gov/. It’s important to ask about the percentage of coverage and the lifetime maximum before proceeding with treatment.
Beautiful smiles are worth the investment at Champlain Orthodontics
Braces are about more than improving a patient’s cosmetic appearance. Oral health plays an important role in total body health, and misaligned teeth can increase the risk for cavities, tooth decay, pain and soreness in the head and neck, and gum disease, among other things. Although orthodontic treatment may seem like a scary investment, it’s one that can last a lifetime!
A smile is too important to choose only based on price. While it’s human nature to want a good deal, it’s important to choose an orthodontist based on their skill and experience. You’ll spend a lot of time visiting your orthodontist’s office during your treatment, so pick a practice that feels warm, welcoming, and comfortable!
At Champlain Orthodontics, our goal is to provide you and your family with a positive and stress-free orthodontic experience, from the first appointment to the last. We believe everyone should have access to high-quality, affordable orthodontic care, and work hard to ensure this for every patient.
